Climatology Hot Spots - Texas
Project Type
GIS Analysis
Date
May 2024
In this climatology map, I processed point data about the locations of tornadoes in Texas to first create a kernel density heat map, which classifies regions by the density of tornado occurrences. Next, I performed a hot spot analysis with a 'honeycomb' matrix to see where the high and low densities became statistically significant, and where the outliers are.
This map is an example of how geoprocessing can allow us to visualize where there are statistically significant high and low densities of incidents, or hot spots and cold spots. By performing these types of geoprocesses we can gain a nuanced understanding of where the risks are, or even compare them to historical data to detect changes and trends. We can also layer this information with other kinds of environmental data to explore why one area sees considerably more tornadoes than another.
