Design

I'm Sophia Cain, the designer behind Hovertown. My field is architecture, a study that traditionally intersects with practically every other, and demands near-universal curiosity. Design can mean architecture, graphics, art, branding, planning, and so much else. But design always means the intentional development of something not only aesthetically attractive but truly meaningful, the production of a work that's been given consideration, even love, and ideally, refined to elegance by the poetic integration of function and form. It's about seeing and meeting needs in a manner both beautiful and refined.

At Hovertown, I do this primarily through the medium of cartography, which I think of as an interview with the larger scale of architecture, that is, urban planning. Here you can take a look at some of my other design endeavors.

The Overpass

GRADUATE THESIS

The built environment is closely tied to the lives we live, so the quality of its design can have either healthful or harmful impacts on quality of life. In the 1960s, the introduction of two major Interstates deeply wounded the historic neighborhood of Overtown, leaving an architectural void that contributed to general poverty and the health disparities associated with it.  The Overpass is a prototype for bridging health disparities by addressing the architectural voids contributing to them.
